Privacy notice
Reading this wire requires no account, and leaves us with almost nothing. This notice explains the little we do hold — for people who write to us, apply for accreditation, or subscribe to the bulletin — and what your rights over it are.
The short version. Reading the wire requires no account and leaves us with almost nothing. We hold details only for people who write to us or apply for accreditation. We do not sell anything to anyone, and we run no advertising or behavioural tracking of any kind.
If you only read the wire
You need no account, and we ask you for nothing. Our servers write a standard access log containing the requested address, a timestamp, the response code and a user agent string. Addresses are truncated before the log is written, so the record cannot be tied back to an individual reader.
Access logs exist to keep the wire running. They are retained for 30 days and then deleted. They are not analysed for behaviour, not combined with any other source, and not shared.
What we hold, and why
- Enquiry form — name, email, outlet, telephone and your message, to answer you and route the enquiry to the right desk. Kept 24 months from last contact.
- Accreditation — the above plus beat, a link to published work and any press card number, to decide and administer accreditation. Kept for the term, then archived.
- Bulletin signup — email address and signup date, to send the bulletin you asked for. Kept until you unsubscribe.
- Access logs — truncated address, URL, timestamp, user agent. Kept 30 days.
Who else sees it
We do not sell, rent, licence or trade personal data. We share it only with the staff who need it to answer you, with our email and hosting providers under contract, and with a court or regulator where the law requires it.
Your rights
You may ask us to give you a copy of what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict what we do with it, or object to our processing it. There is no charge, and we answer within 30 days.
Journalistic sources
Where you contact the group as a source rather than as a journalist, different arrangements apply. We do not log source correspondence in the systems described above, and we will not disclose it in response to a subject access request from anyone else. Ask for the source route before you send anything sensitive.
Security
The wire is served over TLS. Enquiry and accreditation records are held in an access-controlled system with individual accounts and an audit trail. Where a breach is likely to affect you, we will tell you directly — and, because we are a wire service, we will also publish it as a release with an ID.
