Cookie notice

This site sets no cookies. That is why there is no consent banner interrupting your reading. This page exists so that you can verify the claim in thirty seconds rather than take it on trust.

The short version. This site sets no cookies. There is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to. This page exists so you can verify that claim rather than take it on trust.

1. Our position

A wire service exists to be read, quoted and archived. Nothing about that requires us to know who you are or to follow you between sites. We therefore set no cookies of any kind — no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies, and no preference cookies either.

The same applies to the equivalent technologies people reach for when cookies get awkward: no local storage, no session storage, no web beacons, no device fingerprinting, and no pixel in the bulletin.

2. How to check

Do not take our word for it. In any modern browser, open the developer tools, go to the storage or application panel, and look at cookies for this domain. The list is empty. It will stay empty.

3. Third parties

Web fonts may be requested from Google Fonts, which serves them from a cookieless domain and sets no cookies. It does receive your address in the ordinary course of serving a file, as any host must. If that concerns you, the site is designed to be entirely legible in your system default faces: block the request and nothing breaks except the typography.

We embed no video players, no maps, no social widgets, no comment systems, no chat bubbles and no tag managers.

4. What the site does store

Nothing persistent. Two things are held in memory for as long as a page is open, and vanish when you close the tab: the category filter you have selected on the release feed, which is also reflected in the address bar so a filtered view can be shared; and the position of the live UTC clock, which is simply your device clock rendered in UTC. Neither survives a page close, and neither is transmitted to us.

5. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

We honour both signals, in the sense that there is nothing for them to switch off. We do not detect them, because detecting them would itself be a form of profiling we have no use for.

6. Server logs

Cookies are not the only way a site can identify a reader, so for completeness: our access logs truncate addresses before writing, retain for 30 days, and are used only to operate the service. The privacy notice sets this out in full.

7. If this ever changes

If the wire ever needs to set a cookie, we will say so here, we will say so in a release with a release ID, and we will ask for consent before setting it — properly, with a real refusal option that is no harder to click than acceptance.
